What is happening to our weather?

Here in Hampshire our grass is turning brown and our green and pleasant land is looking less and less like home. After weeks of little or no rain our gardens and green spaces are suffering. And stranger still, those us of who live near the Hampshire Surrey border have had flooding to deal with! But despite the recent downpour, the hosepipe bans will still be in force and we will still be short of water. So, what can we do? One of the main things that we can do is it make sure we capture any rain water and use it. A water butt is a cheap but effective way of keeping your garden green despite the water shortage. If you attached one water butt to every drainpipe on your house you can catch almost every drop that lands on your roof.

The most worrying aspect of this dry weather (with flash flooding) is that this may be an effect of climate change. If this is climate change then there is a strong possibility that next summer we will have the same again or worse. So, to save our gardens we need to start thinking about our carbon emissions and energy use. The really sad thing is, 20 years ago organisations such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth were warning us about the effects of climate change but its only know that we can actually see the impact is has on our daily lives that we are willing to stand up and take notice. But hindsight has always been a wonderful thing. Perhaps its time to start planting cacti in our gardens instead!
