Save the Albatross Campaign

This week the RSPB is in Portsmouth to raise awareness of their 'Save The Albatross' campaign at the Volvo Ocean Race celebrations.

Albatrosses are facing extinction due to the practise of 'longline fishing'. The birds are attracted to the fishing bait, get hooked on the lines and then are dragged under the water and drown. Longline fishing kills more than 100,000 albatrosses and 200,000 other seabirds every year. This RSPB campaign aims to raise awareness of the problem and encourage fishermen to adopt simple and cost effective measures on their boats to keep albatrosses away from he baited hooks and save the albatross from extinction.

Help Save the Albatross by visiting the Birdlife International Website or buy a toy albatross from the RSPB online Shop.

Canada sells seal oil as a trendy health supplement

The culling of seals in Canada is underway again this year despite protests from animal welfare groups and celebrities. Many people are particularly upset this year as Seal oil is being used as a source of Omega 3 which is often found in health foods. America has banned the import of seal oil, but the UK is yet to follow suit. Most products in the UK with added Omega 3 is from fish oil but campaigners are urging people to contact the manufacturers if in doubt.
